How to stop Windows Update: 3 Effective Methods

 

Method 1: Disable Windows Update Service

It is best and simplest way to disable Windows Update. This method will work in all the Windows operating systems like Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7 etc. Just follow the step by step procedure below to stop Windows update from running in the background.
Step 1: Press Windows+R On keyboard to open Run dialog box
Step 2: Type “services.msc” (Without quotes) in the Run dialog box and click OK

Method 2: Stop Windows Update By Enabling Metered Connection

In Windows 10 there is a special feature called Metered Connection, If you turn it on Windows Update will be stopped to save data when you are connected to a Wi-Fi connection. Follow the tutorial below.

Step 1: Click Start button then choose Settings.

Step 2: Click on Network & Internet.

Step 3: Click on WiFi at the left side of the screen.

Step 4: Click on the name of the WiFi network you are connected to.

Step 5: Turn on Set as metered connection.

 

If the Metered connection is turned on, Windows won’t download updates when it is connected to a WiFi connection. So this method will work for WiFi users only. As soon as you connect to a different mode of internet connection Windows updates will be downloaded as usual.

Method 3: Stop Windows Update By Uninstalling the Windows Update Assistant

In Windows 10 there is a program called Windows Update Assistant automatically gets installed at the time of installation of the Operating System. This program is the responsible for Windows Update running in the background. If Windows Update Assistant is installed in your system the Windows Services Manager will automatically be enabled even if you disable it manually. So you must uninstall it to stop Windows Update completely. Here is the procedure to do so.

Step 1: Press Windows+R on the keyboard to open Run dialog box.

Step 2: Type “appwiz.cpl”(Without quotes) in the Run dialog box and click OK.

Step 3: When the list of installed programs opens, search for Windows Update Assistant.

Step 4: Right-click on it and select Uninstall.

Step 5: Now there is a folder in the C Drive(This PC>Local Disk(C:)>Windows) namely Windows10Upgrade, delete it.

 

When Windows Update Assistant is uninstalled your next task will be to disable the Windows Update Service. Follow Method 1 to do it. When you disable it, it won’t get enabled again as we have uninstalled the Windows Update Assistant.

Note: When you delete the Windows10Upgrade from the C: Drive, be very careful. Don’t delete any other folder or files there otherwise your Operating System may get corrupted.

Now some of you might think, should we Turn off Windows Update? Should we Uninstall Windows Update Assistant? Is it right to disable Windows Update Service? Well, the answer depends on various factors. First of all, if you have a PC with low Hardware configuration and you face performance lag all the time then you have no choice but to turn off Windows updates. Secondly, if your hard drive memory is nearly full then obviously you will never want to install all the unnecessary updates. Apart from that most of the updates are huge in size and if are using a limited internet plan you need to avoid unnecessary data usage. Thus if you face any of these situations you may stop Windows Updates from getting downloaded.
On another point of view, Windows Updates may be useful. Yes Windows Updates often comes with security patches and other necessary software tools or packages which are beneficial indeed. So if you are not short on memory, you have a powerful machine and if you don’t care about data usage you can opt for enabling Windows Update. If you have disabled the Windows Update Service previously and now changed your mind you can enable it by the following simple steps.

Step 1: Open Run dialog box by pressing Windows+R.

Step 2: Type “services.msc” (without quotes)and click OK.

Step 3: Find Windows Update in the Windows Services Manager.

Step 4: Right-click on it and select Properties.

Step 5: Set Startup Type to “Automatic”.

Step 6: Click Apply then OK.

Now you have successfully enabled the Windows Updates service.
